Why You Should Never Neglect the Men's Department (Or Your Man's Closet) While Shopping
Let’s be real guys, it’s 2020. More than ever we’re seeing the prevalence of androgynous fashion and a big middle finger up to what society considers gender specific clothing. Whether you agree with it or not is totally to your discretion, but I’m speaking facts when I say there are perks to it that we all can benefit from. For us ladies, I think I can speak for the vast majority of us and say that’s men’s clothing is so appealing because of its versatility.
We love that oversized fit to be able to
Wear as a Dress …
Or to
Tie into a Crop Top
With a pair of
High Waisted Shorts
And a pair of
Statement Heels
On the flip side … we may just want to throw on a blazer and tuck our man tee into something …
Whether it’s a pair of denim shorts
Or a
Pleated skirt …
because why not? 🤷🏾♀️
If these styling options don’t do much for you, just remember there are tons of others that you can experiment with. Plus, being able to shop in two different departments and dress from two different wardrobes is a whole lot better than being limited to one!

Outfit Deets
The only thing better than a t-shirt is one that’s big enough to wear as a dress. That’s how I intended to wear this “Poetic Justice” graphic tee ($7) that I found in the men’s department of JCPenney. I felt it would be PERFECT to wear with the red leopard print boots that I bought last November from Shoe Dazzle. It’s obviously not over-the-knee boot weather anymore, so being that I love this cheap find of mine, I figured I’d see what else I could do with it. Can’t go wrong with just throwing on a pair of sandals (Miss Lola, $24) and an oversized pair of shades (Amazon, $24). Super simple, easy, and perfect for any casual occasion. If you want a little more razzle dazzle, pair your oversized tee with a cute bag (Amazon, $17) and bright dangle earrings (Amazon, $8) to add some more color. Denim is also great to pair with a t-shirt as we all know, so even if you aren’t necessarily wearing it, it would still be a great touch to just wrap a denim jacket around your waist. You never know when you’re going to walk into a cold grocery store or public establishment, so it’s always good to have something to cover up with, anyway.
If you did want to wear a denim bottom, let’s say a pair of shorts (Goodwill), make sure you give your t-shirt a little tuck in the front so that the shorts can actually be seen. After that, you really only need shoes; I opted for a pair of white sneakers (JCPenney, $30) but sandals would surely suffice. If you’re planning to add a little more to this look, like a thrifted blazer ($5) and fishnets, I wouldn’t advise the sandal route … but a heeled bootie? Absolutely. I’m rarely a fan of heels and denim shorts, so since I had the strong urge to show this tee paired with some heels, I made a very quick change. I swapped out the shorts for a black and white pleated skirt (Goodwill, $5), added a belt around my waist (Shein, $6), and threw on a hat with my new pair of booties (JCPenney). Just like that, I had myself an entirely new look that would be suitable for a less casual, but not quite formal occasion.
Now, oversized t-shirts aren’t the only type of men’s clothing that us ladies can benefit from. I often help myself to Deion’s button-up shirts because he actually has great taste, and several of his tops are a nice, colorful pattern which is right up my alley. Just as shown, I’ll tie them up into a crop top with a subtle plunging neckline, you know, just to show off my mid-boobie ink. With this particular top (PacSun), I wanted to pair it with these high-waisted shorts (Shop Priceless, $28) that gave me extreme “fashionable tourist” vibes. From that, I started thinking “fashionable tourist…” but from the 70’s. So I pulled out my high platform shoes (Miss Lola, $41), ordered a pair of round sunnies from Amazon (2-pack for $16), and topped it off with a rust colored hat that I also purchased from Amazon ($16). The iridescent purse (Shop Priceless, $29) was just a last minute addition that ended up working very well with the color palette of this look.
While I was super pleased with the turnout of my 70’s inspired tourist look, I wanted to have a more modern variation that gave more of a glamorous vibe. I ditched the hat, changed into a pair of heeled mules (Shoe Dazzle, $10), and accessorized with the perfect coordinating purse with a chain link detail (TJ Maxx). By the way, it was pure coincidence that these two matched so perfectly. Shortly after receiving the shoes in the mail, I had a light bulb flicker on in my head that they may be a pretty spot on match with this purse that I tend to forget about. Lo and behold, they were a match made in heaven.
