Styling 101: Let Me Show You Why You Need a Few Midi Skirts in Your Wardrobe!
Back when I was in middle and high school, midi skirts were NOT a thing. I mean, technically they were, but in my head there were two skirt lengths and those two lengths only; mid-thigh or “finger tip” length and to the floor. Anywhere in between would not have came home from the store with me. I really can’t say for sure what my reasoning was, but if I know myself as well as I think I do, it’s probably because I took pride in my legs and liked showing them off. It’s 2020 and that’s still very much true. My style has just changed so much that most things I hated when I was younger are among my favorite garments to wear today - and that should be the case with everyone. At this grown age, no one should have the same style as their middle/high school selves, and if they do, refer them to me so I can begin working on their personal style development!
When I made the decision to buy this Missguided pleated midi skirt, I knew that I WASN’T about to pair it with a tie-front, white button up shirt. That’s how the company styled it … and not to be shady in the slightest, I knew I could style it a lot better than they did. My goal was for this look to feel more like Summer and not have such a Fall color palette. I’ll say I bounced from searching for red tops, to orange tops, until I finally decided on a yellow, one-shoulder bodysuit. It’s simple but not necessarily basic, and it was a shade of yellow that complemented the colors in the skirt while adding just the right amount of contrast. With the addition of a camel-colored fedora hat, tassel earrings, a waist belt, and a beautifully bronzed pair of Steve Madden block heels, I had myself a complete brunch-worthy look. I wouldn’t put it in the super-dressy category, so I’ll even go as far as calling it a casual, late-afternoon date or “running errands” look. After all, it is the year of a global pandemic, so since leisurely going out to restaurants and non-essential businesses is pretty much cancelled, we just get dressed up to go grocery shopping.
The idea that I had for this skirt (Boohoo) is so underwhelming compared to what I actually ended up wearing. I wanted to wear a plain white tee underneath a boyfriend blazer, topped off with a pair of white sneakers. However, when I woke up on the day that I intended to shoot the look, I realized I didn’t even have a white tee to wear. Versus going out to buy one, I scanned my closet for ANY top that would allow me to just get this shoot done. Lo and behold, this absolutely gorgeous blouse from PrettyLittleThing stared me right in the eye and said “HELLO?! Are you dumb, blind, or both?”
Truth be told, I’m both, but in my defense I had a completely different vision for this blouse which didn’t include a skirt or blush pink at all. I’m beyond satisfied with how the look turned out, though. I couldn’t quite decide which pair of heels I liked the most, so I just shot them both. The nude, pointed toe heels are a classic, so more than likely the blouse is going to draw the attention and keep the attention. The platform ankle-strap heels, on the other hand, are more eye-catching. They aren’t the same print as the blouse, but the colors are similar enough that at first glance you may just think that I came out matching like that.
It totally all depends on if you want one focal point of your look or possibly one and a half focal points, but regardless, each shoe paired with this look will make the perfect, nicer dinner-date outfit.
The colors REALLY do it for me in this look. Though, pink and yellow typically give me extreme strawberry-banana vibes, this is one of those cases where I loved the way the combination turned out. More than likely, when one of the pieces in my look are black, I’m not pairing it with something else that’s black. Nothing against the folks that eat, sleep, breathe black clothing, I just truly have to be in a particular mood to dress myself in all black. With that being said, I had every intent to style this promo tee, purchased from an Atlanta-based, luxury designer, with a patterned bottom. I found exactly what I was looking for at Boohoo, but when I received it in the mail it looked nothing like the picture. Without going off on a tangent like I tend to do, let’s just say that was my last straw with them. Luckily, I was able to find a similar skirt at Missguided that I ended up liking more anyway. My only complaint is that the part around my waist fit a little weird, but it wasn’t anything that the belt wouldn’t hide - one of my most used styling hacks!
By now, y’all should know that hats are my favorite accessory. They’re little but do a heck of a lot for an outfit, so there will absolutely come a point where I own every color. The fedora I’m wearing with this look is from the same seller that I bought the camel-colored one, and they literally have about 20 other colors. Every color you see in these GoJane heels, you’ll be able to find a fedora to match it … and just about any colored top or bottom you’re planning on wearing, you’ll be able to match with these rainbow babies.
All in all, this is truly just a bomb ass baddie look. Wear it whenever you feel like it, because queens don’t need an occasion to look this good.
